Strength-Based Programming For Students With Disabilities
April 5, 2005
Presenter
Western Hills Area Education Agency, Ida Grove, Iowa
9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
As schools strive to meet the needs of a range of learners, educators and families are learning the value of strength-based programming. Students diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, Asperger Syndrome, High Functioning Autism and Nonverbal Learning Disability have unique constellations of learning needs. Many of these students have gifts and strengths which are overlooked when services focus on a deficit-based model. Preconceived notions of how disabilities affect cognition and the fact that many believe "bright students" need to be equally developed and motivated often prevent students from receiving services that focus on their strengths and interests.
This inservice is designed to provide attendees with insights into the roadblocks many students diagnosed with a disability face during their school career. Instructional strategies that focus on student strenghts while simultaneously addressing areas of need will be shared. Suggestions for utilizing a multi-disciplinary approach to engineer comprehensive, seamless and efficient educational programming for students will be the focus of the talk.
Issues of frequent concern for this particular student population will be explored. Topics will include the importance of teacher match, instructional aide suport, behavior issues as they relate to a disabiity, positive behavior supports, student and staff training, and the importance of collaboration.
