Connecting Resources in Education for Students with Special Needs

During her presentation, Ms. Handrich will discuss ways that teams comprised of special and general education teachers, parents, administrators, support staff and community resources can work together to meet student needs proactively and preventively. Issues that are frequently of concern will be addressed, including the importance of teacher match, instructional aide support, behavioral issues and instructional strategies that highlight student strengths. Practical, research-based programming suggestions that address student needs while capitalizing on the strengths of a child will be discussed. Suggestions for utilizing a multi-disciplinary approach to engineer comprehensive, seamless and efficient educational programming for students with special needs will be the focus of the talk. Positive behavioral supports that address behavior in an affirmative proactive educational apporach rather than through a reactive punitive approach will also be addressed.
