Meeting the Needs of a Range of Learners in the Early Childhood Setting

April 17, 2004
Presenter
26th Annual Early Childhood Conference, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Whitewater, WI
1:00-2:00 PM and 4:00-5:00 PM

There is a growing consensus that young children with disabilities are served in the same community settings as their typically developing peers, yet inclusion is one of the major challenges facing those who work with young children. With creative and flexible planning, caring and empathic attitudes on the part of adults, and the creative use of community resources to provide specialized services, children with disabilities can be included successfully in early childhood education programs. This presentation will provide information about inclusion practices that promote developmental growth as well as positive behavior. Barriers to full inclusion, the value of flexible grouping, and the importance of collaboration with community resources will also be discussed.
